SMS Delivery Report

The SMS delivery report is a message from an SMCS (Short Message Service Center) that informs you that your text message sent from your device was received by the intended recipient. To put it another way, an SMS delivery report shows the present state of the text messages you submitted to the carrier.

Contrary to popular belief, text delivery reports do not indicate that a text message you sent was received by the intended person; rather, it simply verifies that your device transmitted the message successfully.

When an SMS message is sent from your phone, it is first delivered to the SMSC (SMSC). The message will be saved and retrieved by the server until it attempts to send it. The text message will then either get there or not arrive at all.

There are two main purposes of SMS delivery reports:

1. Notifies you that your SMS message sent from your device was delivered.

Receiving SMS delivery reports notifies senders that their messages were transmitted to the SMSC. This is useful information for businesses that rely on text messages to communicate with their customers.

2. Shows the current status of the text messages.

The second purpose of an SMS delivery report is to show the present status of a text message. For example, if you sent a text message to someone, and they haven’t replied yet, you can check the delivery report to see if the message was delivered successfully.

What are the types of SMS delivery Reports?

There are different types of SMS delivery reports. It depends on the network carrier or the mobile brand you carry. However, the most common types of delivery reports are the following:

  • Successful Delivery Report – The successful delivery report will show you that your text message was transmitted to the SMSC and delivered to the intended recipient.
  • Failed Delivery Report – The failed delivery report will show you that your text message was not transmitted to the SMSC or not delivered to the intended recipient.
  • Pending Delivery Report – The pending delivery report will show you that your text message was transmitted to the SMSC but not yet delivered to the intended recipient.
  • Partial Delivery Report – A partial delivery report will show you that your text message was partially delivered to the intended recipient. This usually happens when the text message is too long and gets cut off in the middle.
  • Account Full report – This type of SMS delivery report will show you that your text message was not transmitted to the SMSC because your account does not have enough credit or that it is full.
  • Message Blocked report – The message blocked report will show you that your text message was not transmitted to the SMSC because it is considered spam by the network carrier.
  • Invalid Destination Address – This type of SMS delivery report will show you that your text message was not transmitted to the SMSC because the destination address is invalid.

What is Sent as SMS via Server?

The “Sent as SMS via Server” message usually appears when you are trying to send a text message to a person who is not using iMessage. It means that the text message will be sent as an SMS instead of an iMessage.

It is common in Android devices, and the change from the usual delivery report is due to the RCS messaging protocol.

The Application Programming Interface (API) allows messaging software to integrate with the Communication Center. For example, RCS allows users to share photos and group conversations. RCS has taken the place of SMS as Android’s main messaging platform.

When Android users send RCS messages through the messaging application, the new text receipt “sent as SMS via the server” appears. As a result, recipients are unable to obtain the typical text acknowledgment that was sent, delivered, or read.

Does SMS delivery report fail?

Sometimes, the SMS delivery report may fail to show up even if you have turned on the feature on your mobile device. This usually happens when the text message is sent to a person who is not using a mobile phone or when the recipient’s phone is turned off.

Delivery reports are a great way to keep track of your text messages and make sure that they are being delivered to the intended recipient. However, you should keep in mind that they are not 100% reliable and may fail to show up occasionally.
